Scalable Communications, the specialist integrator providing secure, converged network solutions, today announces the completion of an Internet security solution for Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust. Implemented across all hospital sites, the solution will facilitate the application of user security policies; ensure more effective Internet usage, and greater system performance. Mark Smith, IT Manager at Great Ormond Street NHS Trust, explains, “Initially, the web-filtering solution was going to be a staged implementation process, a slowly migrated changeover from our old proxy servers. However, an unforeseen network failure over the New Year meant that we had to roll out the solution to all of our user groups, some 3,400 members of staff. With Scalable’s assistance we managed this in only two days.” The disparate user groups in Great Ormond Street meant that generic restricted access would be inappropriate. With ease of configuration and watertight security at the top of the agenda, Smith looked to a Bluecoat solution to meet the Internet-filtering needs of the hospital. “We needed a solution that could not only secure our network, but also protect our employees. Working in a healthcare environment that focuses predominately on the biology of children, an innocent web-browse on a physiological ailment could inadvertently conjure dangerous results. That said, we also needed a solution that was flexible, enabling a quick override that would let us immediately access relevant medical websites, without wasting time reconfiguring the whole system.” In deploying automated Internet filters, Great Ormond Street can now capitalise on significant efficiency gains. Staff time is saved through the elimination of the Internet Explorer login, as it has been synchronised to Active Directory, and streamlined Internet usage has resulted in increased system performance. Simon Brown, Managing Director of Scalable Communications, adds, “Web-filtering is a great way of securing a network, without the constraints. For a public sector body like Great Ormond Street, which has a diverse group of healthcare practitioners, surgeons, nurses and administration support staff, each with wildly differing needs, it’s a perfect fit. Furthermore, the server facilitates proxying and web-caching, and it has increased the capacity from a 10MB, to a 100MB connection, delivering the critical speed that is essential to support the 24/7/365 nature of hospital operations.” |
