Implemented to support the 24/7/365 environment of clinical operations, the remote working solution will also stand as a strategic platform for RiO, a web-based clinical system that allows community healthcare professionals to access business critical data, such as patient records, on the road. Graeme Hollocks, IT Manager at Hounslow PCT explains, “Initially, the requirement for remote working was driven by our executive team, however, it was critical that we considered all opportunities to maximise how and where such a policy could deliver long-term value. With RiO in the pipeline, the deployment and investment required for a remote working policy was justified.” Opting for a thin-client SSL VPN with two-factor authentication, security and ease of management was a key factor in the design and implementation of Hounslow’s remote access solution. Keen to capitalise on the investment, Graeme Hollocks wanted to achieve widespread adoption amongst all 700 of the Trust’s employees, and therefore usability was pivotal. “Health workers are not IT experts, and from the outset simplicity and ease of use was critical, especially where security is concerned. With the majority of breaches resulting from internal misuse, it was essential that the additional security processes were watertight.” Available to all of the Trust’s 700 employees, Hounslow PCT is now able to appreciate the productivity gains and operational advantages of remote working, and is anticipating significant improvements in patient care, diagnoses and treatment. Simon Brown, Director of Scalable Communications, adds, “With many PCT’s deploying on-the-road applications such as RiO, the platform upon which you build a remote working architecture needs to be secure, agile and easy to use – from an IT and end-user perspective. The ability to access emails, patient records, x-rays or medical notes on the move can facilitate commercial rewards, but it’s important to recognise this as a long-term strategy and not a knee-jerk reaction to boardroom demands.” Graeme Hollocks continues, “The benefits of this remote working solution have been felt immediately, the fact that over a hundred staff used the home-working option in its first fortnight of deployment is testament to how popular it is! The solution is future proof for forthcoming growth and development, but most importantly it will help revolutionise patient care in Hounslow.” |
